Small vessel engineering

One of the major challenges in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases is the development of vascular grafts of small diameter. Besides, tissue engineering faces another great challenge: the vascularization of biomaterials to build tissues. In the Laboratory for Vascular Translational Science (INSERM U1148) two different approaches using biomaterials have been developed. The first one is based on PVA to engineer small graft vessels, whereas the second one uses polysaccharide-based hydrogels as a support for microvasculature development. Results demonstrate how in both cases physico-chemical properties, such as material coating, mechanical properties and scaffold geometry, play a key role on cell behavior and determine the success of these strategies.
